Education programs for veterans are designed to help them transition back to education that they may have lost while serving, to aid veterans in getting post-secondary and higher education opportunities, to help with recruitment and retention for the military and to the Selected Reserve. Here are some of the education programs the VBA offers.
Post-Vietnam Era Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP)
This program is geared towards veterans who were on active duty from January 1, 1977 to June 30, 1985. The amount of this program is dependant on how much the service member paid into it while active. It must be used within 10 years after service has ended.
Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (MGIB)
This program can be activated during or post active duty. Usually the benefits last for 3 years, and must also be used before 10 years after separation from the military.
Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR)
This program is designed for those in the Selected Reserve, and is funded by the United States Department of Defense. In the case of this program, they can get 3 years of entitlement, and must use it within 14 years. The Department of Defense makes the determination as to the eligibility of a member.
Reservists Educational Assistance Program (REAP)
This is another program with 3 years of entitlement, and is for members of either the Selected or Ready reserve that are placed into duty for special operations. It can be used for the time that the member is part of those reserves.
